Abstract

International schools normally employ culturally diverse teaching staff to complement its international curriculum and international student body. Local and expatriate teachers work together to deliver curriculum and instruction for the students, but it is not known to what extent these teachers think and act in culturally different ways, considering that they come from different countries. One international school with culturally diverse teaching staff in Jakarta, Indonesia was selected in order to see the extent that local and expatriate teachers deviate from each other using Erin Meyer’s Culture Map. This map features eight dimensions that highlight cultural differences. A total population of 40 local and expatriate teachers were surveyed using the Culture Map questionnaire. A subset of these teachers was interviewed to find out what is driving the cultural similarities or differences with reference to the Culture Map. The data reveal that local and expatriate teachers deviate from each other to a small extent. This might be explained by the fact that almost all of the teachers are coming from Asian countries, which share common values. However, there is a notable deviation of both local and expatriate teachers from the Culture Map itself. This can be attributed to the following: 1) local teachers recognizing the need to modify their communication style with fellow expatriate teachers, 2) expatriate teachers adjusting to the host country, and 3) an emerging culture map based on the profession of the teachers. Practical implications are discussed towards the end of the paper.
