With Indonesia actively encouraging foreign investment into particular sectors of the economy, it is vital that effective communications and relationships are established between both foreign investors and the government. Government relations is a professional which is very underdeveloped in Indonesia but considered a vital component of the investment strategies by the researcher. It is vital that foreign investors and even many local companies have a GR team which has deep knowledge of their core business processes and of how regulations are made in Indonesia and also the regions in which the companies operate. Our President has stated that Indonesia needs to do more to attract foreign Investors and an important component of that planning should be recognizing the unique challenges faced by foreigners investing in a culturally diverse country such as Indonesia. The management of both internal and external communications are key duties performed by government affairs managers. Communicating is a complex task in most environments. Add the complexity of broad cultural diversity, multiple levels of government affecting most company activities, language differences and political and other challenges and the need for effective government relations becomes clear. Indonesia's relatively low ranking for ease of doing business and the financial impact of poor Government relations both add weight to the argument that multinationals need to have a skilled, professionally recognized and dedicated government relations function. It serves the best interests of not only the Investors but also the Government of Indonesia in its endeavor for economic growth and development.
