Abstract

Although it is inevitable to come across challenges and problems in life, the fact that so many were robbed of the ability to regulate emotional stability to healthily overcome those struggles is concerning. This often leads to the resorting of self-destructive behaviours to cope with overwhelming mental and emotional struggles, which has become increasingly normalised among a significant number of the human population. Instilling a false sense of temporary relief or comfort, these behaviours are an extension of self-sabotage, actions which harm the self mentally, if not physically, and stand in the way of the health and happiness one deserves. The creators wanted to increase awareness about self-destructive behaviours through vivid depictions highlighting the emotional strain and mental struggles using a cinematic dance film as a medium to express feeling and intent with the support of beautiful movement set to stirring musical scores, filmed and presented in an aesthetically alluring cinematic style. Through the cinematic dance film “Breathe”, the creators wish to provide an overview of the influence an environment has on perpetuating self-destructive behaviours while implicitly stressing the importance of nurturing mental and emotional health.
