Abstract

There are various forms of entertainment that can be easily accessed these days as a result of advancement in broadcasting technologies, particularly television. Since the early days of broadcasting, sports have always been one of the most popular types of entertainment. Even in modern times when varying types of new entertainments constantly emerge, sports, in this case soccer, remain as a popular form of television entertainment. The study focuses on the aspects that surround watching soccer matches as a preferred form of television entertainment for Indonesian youth audiences. The theories used in this study are the function of performance by Richard Schechner. The theory of Approaching Play by Richard Schechner and will be supported by Phenomenological Approach theory from the book “The Routledge Introduction to Theatre and Performance Studies” are also used as ways of approaching soccer matches as a form of performance. Relations and impacts to social aspects that relates to sense of identity will also be discussed in this study.
