Abstract

Servant leadership is a leadership style widely applied in various companies. Various studies have stated that servant leadership has a positive impact on companies. However, no research has studied servant leadership's quality of internal communication at PT Pertamina Patra Niaga. Therefore, this research wants to study whether the servant leadership style at PT Pertamina Patra Niaga is one factor that brings progress to the company. The assessment is reviewed from internal communication and employee performance. This study uses the qualitative method that gathers data through interviews. The results show that PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, in the Trading & Other Business division, has implemented servant leadership. One of the implementations is that the leader gives room for the employees to speak. He even talks about things outside their work, such as personal things.
The leader is willing to listen to his employees' perspectives. He does not blame his employees. Instead, he is responsible and protects employees that work directly under him from the anger of the leaders higher than himself. Accordingly, he is a helpful leader. He wants to make employees that work under him upgrade themselves. Therefore, he allows them to speak up and meet with employees in other functions to get new knowledge. He listens to the employees' perspectives, allowing him to know the potential and weaknesses of his employees. He helps employees who work under him to perform better by matching one of the employees with others who can support each other. He does this because he has learned the characteristics of the employees. He puts his employees above himself. Thus, servant leadership has been implemented in PT Pertamina Patra Niaga in the Trading & Other Business division.
